A novel ENSO monitoring index and its potential for drought application

The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) changes the air flow in tropics, causing global droughts, floods, typhoons, and other natural disasters. Therefore, monitoring forecasting of ENSO events effectively play an important role disaster prevention mitigation. This paper proposes a novel index using GNSS-derived zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) temperature (T), which is called standardized (SEMI), validated its performance by introducing precipitation evapotranspiration (SPEI). Multichannel singular spectral analysis (MSSA) Lomb-Scargle periodogram are first applied to determine periodic signals ZTD T. Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) then used analyze spatio-temporal characteristics Finally, response thresholds T determined moving window correlation (MWCA) method, SEMI established based on relationship between abnormal sea surface anomaly (SSTa) ZTD/T. 97 GNSS stations corresponding SPEI over period 2006–2016 Taiwan province has been obtained validate capacity proposed for monitoring. Experimental results reveal that (1) annual semi-annual periods existed with values 365.25 182.625 days, respectively. (2) have good correlations SSTa, coefficients 0.64 0.70, (3) [?1.13 °C, 0.84 °C] [?1.09 0.69 °C], (4) SSTa coefficient 0.77 proven comparing 0.83. result great significance drought flood technique.
